About Williamsburg
Williamsburg was originally known as Middle Plantation, and was a fortified settlement between the James River and York River. The capital of the Virginia Colony was moved from Jamestown to Middle Plantation in 1698, and the name was changed to “Williamsburg” in honor of King William III of England. Williamsburg grew and soon became the bustling center of political, economic, religious, and social life in Virginia.
The famous College of William and Mary was founded in Williamsburg in 1693. General George Washington also used Williamsburg as an assembly area for the Continental Army in 1781 before the siege of Yorktown, which lead to victory and American independence.
After the capital was moved to Richmond in 1780, much of the life and business of Williamsburg left. Williamsburg became known as a secluded college town and rural county center. The loss of business and the lack of new construction projects helped to preserve many of the buildings that are seen today. Williamsburg underwent a significant restoration in 1926 with help from John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Block by block, the city of Williamsburg was restored to its former glory, and appeared just as it did hundreds of years earlier. Today, Williamsburg is an international attraction for those interested in American colonial history and life.
Williamsburg Geography, Position, & Landscape
Williamsburg is built on high ground between the James and York River, and is in the center of the Historic Triangle of Virginia, which includes the historic cities of Jamestown and Yorktown. Williamsburg is located in the northwest corner of the Hampton Roads area. While Williamsburg is known for its historic district, Williamsburg is not only an historic district. As businesses grow and new residential areas are needed in Williamsburg and surrounding areas, new construction projects are undertaken, requiring site clearing, tree clearing, excavation, and land grading work.
